Tidal energy in the Netherlands
As long as the seawater rises and falls, there is a flow of water. Thanks to the moon, this is the case continuously. Flowing water is converted into electrical energy. The daily availability and predictability makes tidal energy reliable as a sustainable energy source.
We introduce a number of companies that work with the tides.

Dutch tidal current applications
In the Netherlands, Tocardo, FishFlow Innovations and Water2energy are working on turbines that can be set up in the free tidal current. For low current velocities, SeaQurrent is developing an underwater kite.
Tocardo tidal turbines

The tide around the iconic Afsluitdijk was the inspiration to create the first turbine types (T-1) and gave the courage to go bigger and develop a new turbine type (T-2) for yet another Dutch icon, the Oosterscheldestormvloedkering in the province of Zeeland, part of the world-famous Delta Works. This installation is the largest tidal energy project in the Netherlands and the world's largest commercial tidal installation of five turbines in a single array.

Tidal turbine from Water2energy
Since the end of 2021, a pilot project has been running in the port of Vlissingen in the sluice in the canal through Walcheren. A tidal turbine with smart blades generates energy from the tidal difference between the level of the Western Scheldt and the water level of the canal. The expectation is that sufficient "blue" power will be supplied to cover the annual electricity consumption of the Vlissingen lock complex. This is comparable to the consumption of approximately 80 households

Our products offer new solutions for fish migration and help prevent mortality and damage. By focusing on the natural behaviour of fish, FishFlow Innovations is the ideal partner for water boards and hydraulic engineering organisations that attach great importance to the welfare of fish.

Tidal Kite by SeaQurrent

Tidal and ocean currents contain a huge amount of kinetic energy. The patented 'multi-wing' TidalKite™ makes it possible to generate clean electricity, even from shallower waters with lower current velocities.
SeaQurrent successfully built, tested and operated a scale model of the TidalKite™ in the Wadden Sea in 2018 and 2019. The tests focused on optimizing the kite flying and operational handling in a real environment. The next test of a scaled-up kite is planned for Ameland in 2022.

Tidal basins
In addition to energy from installations set up in the free flow, it is also possible to generate electricity by means of basins. In the Netherlands too, it is possible to collect water with flood in a water basin connected to turbines. If the water difference in front of and behind a dam is high enough, you open the lock gates. The water flows past the turbines, which are connected to generators, back to the sea and in this way the electricity is generated.
Grevelingenmeer
Along the coast, the tidal difference decreases from Vlissingen in a northerly direction from four meters to approximately one meter around Den Helder. Zeeland is therefore the most suitable for this form of tidal energy. The Grevelingenmeer offers an option, whereby the water safety requirements must be included in the implementation. The increased costs make the realization of the project challenging. The ever-increasing value of local reliable sustainable energy makes this option increasingly promising.
