WECO combines fast deployment and autonomous inspection at sea

Bijgewerkt op: 14 mei

Milestone at sea: EWA member WECO successfully tests rapid "drop-and-pull" wave energy deployment, supported by DEMCON's unmanned inspection vessel.

Drop-and-pull installation

This spring, WECO reached a key milestone with another successful offshore field test of its wave energy converter just off the coast of Scheveningen. Using its innovative "drop-and-pull" method, the system was installed and made operational in just 32 minutes. This fast, simple, and adaptable deployment technique reduces installation costs and offshore downtime — crucial factors in scaling up wave energy solutions.

Partnering on unmanned inspections at sea

As part of their drive toward efficient and autonomous offshore operations, WECO is collaborating with DEMCON to test the use of Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) for autonomous inspection of the wave energy systems. A future vision is emerging where wave energy converters could recharge USVs at sea, enabling longer and more sustainable offshore monitoring missions.

Next steps

Building on the insights gathered from field trials, WECO is now developing the next generation of its "Kaizen Wave Energy Converter." The new design focuses on improving long-term reliability and performance throughout its operational life. This project is supported by the Kansen voor West subsidy program, which promotes innovation and sustainability in the region.
