The Energy from Water Association (EWA) is delighted to announce that two of our members, Equinox Ocean Turbines BV and SeaQurrent, have secured significant new funding to advance their groundbreaking technologies.

Equinox Ocean Turbines

Equinox Ocean Turbines has successfully closed its seed funding round, raising €2.4 million. This round was led by EIT InnoEnergy, with significant contributions from Damen Maritime Ventures, NOM, FOM, Init Power, and two private investors.

This infusion of capital will accelerate the development and deployment of Equinox’s turbine technology, which harnesses the immense 700 GW potential of ocean currents to generate clean, reliable energy. The funds will be used to develop a pre-commercial turbine by 2025 and expand Equinox’s global footprint to meet the growing demand for clean energy solutions.

CEO Pieter de Haas stated, “This is a significant step towards making the marine energy sector a commercial reality.”

SeaQurrent

SeaQurrent, the Dutch deep-tech and clean energy startup behind the innovative Tidalkite, has received a €2.5 million grant from Waddenfonds (Wadden Fund). The funding will be used for further optimization of the Tidalkite technology, improve anchoring and ensure proper ecological integration, including measuring underwater noise. The project is expected to deliver 5 megawatts of renewable generating capacity, potentially contributing to the energy self-sufficiency of the island of Ameland.

The Tidalkite is an innovative underwater kite specifically developed to harness energy from tidal currents in three dimensions.

CEO Youri Wentzel commented, “Tidal currents pack immense energy. Battling these currents requires resilience and determination, symbolizing the spirit of perseverance needed to navigate challenges and achieve goals.”

Growing confidence in the sector

Both funding successes are crucial milestones for the marine energy sector, demonstrating growing confidence in the potential of ocean energy solutions.

We extend our congratulations to Equinox and SeaQurrent for their achievements and look forward to their continued progress.
