The Netherlands continues to position itself as a region for offshore innovation, and wave energy is slowly gaining more recognition as a part of the clean energy mix.
Last year, AE-Wave Hexapod, an EWA member, was selected by the Province of South Holland to professionally showcase its innovative technology through a promotional video aimed at raising awareness and interest in wave energy.
Why does wave energy matter?
Why does wave energy matter? As Max from AE-Wave explains in this new video, "The sun doesn't always shine, and the wind doesn't always blowābut the waves keep coming." Wave energy offers a predictable and consistent source of renewable power, particularly valuable in times when solar and wind output is low. This makes it an important contributor to a more resilient and stable energy supply.
The AE-Wave Hexapod is a novel wave energy converter designed to be integrated in offshore wind farms. It uses three floating buoys connected to six robotic arms-formerly used in automotive assembly-to absorb wave movement in all directions. As waves move the floaters, the robotic arms convert this motion into electricity.
In the video link below, the team gives a clear, visual explanation of how the technology works.
Looking ahead: Future Impacts
Looking to the future, AE-Wave Hexapod aims to launch a pilot project within a year to validate performance at sea. This important next step is supported by the Just Transition Fund (JTF) and the province of North Holland. In addition to testing the technology offshore, AE-Wave Hexapod will develop a training programme to ensure a skilled workforce is ready to install and maintain the Hexapods in future commercial deployments.
The WaveHexapod project is made possible by the Just Transition Fund (JTF) and co-financed by the European Union. The long-term vision is to see the AE-Wave Hexapod deployed alongside offshore wind farms, not as a competitor but as a complementary technology, working in harmony to optimise output and ensure energy availability in all weather conditions.
